What The Beep Is A '.rar' File?

I downloaded this software or at least thought I would get an application file, but it seems to be something with type '.rar'. What's that?

You probably heard of 'zip' files. These are containers into which other files have been compressed to reduce their size and, these days, to make it easier to distribute them as it is more convenient to download just one 'zip' file than many others that are contained in it. Such containers are also called 'archives'.

When you right-click a file or folder (or several of those) in Windows Explorer and then click 'Send To' followed by 'Compressed (zipped) Folder', you're producing a 'zip' file. The same is of course true if you would use tools like Winzip.

Well, 'rar' files are similar. The easiest way to handle them, is by installing a - you guessed it - freeware tool called '7zip'. It doesn't only handle 'rar' files, but many other archive types as well. You'll find 7zip on the unparallelled SourceForge, on the 7zip page.
